Kiss, Bow or Shake Hands????

After reading about two Spanish speaking countries in the book "Kiss, Bow or Shake Hands", I learned a lot of interesting facts about Peru and Guatemala. Peru, for instance, are very superstitious. They do not like the number thirteen. They are for the most part cheap people. Although the are cheap, strangely enough, tipping is mandatory. They also find it rude to reject an invitation. So I guess if you already have something to do that day, you better cancel it:) Lastly, guinea pig is a common meal. Strange for us Americans so be prepared for the culture of Peru. Guatemala is recognized as a Spanish speaking but most of them speak Indian. An important thing to make note of is that the 'ok' gesture is NOT acceptable here. It is rude and inappropriate. White flowers are reserved for funerals only. Compared to other Latino countries, Guatemalans are very calm. Being very calm, they do not like loud voices. Also, they live in a macho culture. Which means women are treated differently than the men are. Having their differences, they also have some similarities. Family is very important for both. Punctuality is not a concern but if you want to make negotiations it is important to have a good friendship with that person. So take in mind all these things before going to either place! -Laurencita <3

Hispanidad con Cileia Miranda

The presentation with Cileia Miranda was interesting. Truthfully, I was expecting it to be boring but it wasn't. She kept my attention and surprised me of  how little I knew. She knew the history and facts, and it was all personal to her. She came from Mexico and told us the identity crisis she faced when she came here. These Mexicans deal with a lot when they come here to the United States. She told us the four most important things to any Spanish person is 1. FAMILY 2. FRIENDS 3. FOOD 4. FUN. When these Latino/ Hispanic people come over here they are sacrificing everything. They leave their family and friends behind so they can give them a better life. I believe many people don't fully understand this; they think they have come to take away jobs from 'Americans'. As Mrs. Miranda explained, this country was based on immigrants. They have a right to have a chance at a better life just as much as you and I do. Theirs just includes coming to another country. I was born and raised in America but I have recently gone to Mexico twice this year. One doesn't fully understand why these people come here until you see the poverty they live in. As many of us complain about it being hot or being bored because the television doesn't have anything good on or we don't have or iPod, they go all the time without out air conditioning, televisions, or iPods. The ladies all do laundry by hand because they can't afford washers and dryers. It is sad to see this poverty down there but very humbling. I hope everyone takes the time to look at both sides before assuming. --Laurencita <3
